Smarts

17 Aug

Cole asked me, in the car a few days ago, “Why am I so smart?”

He wasn’t being weird, it was asked genuinely, so I wanted to give him a good answer.

I said there were a couple reasons.  First, we have a good family and he has the things he needs so he doesn’t have to worry and that makes it easier to be smart.  Second, he’s been reading books since he was a baby which is different from a kid who sees a book for the first time when he goes to school.  Third, smartness is just one of his talents.

I don’t know if I handled this right.  I don’t want him to be snotty–we talk a lot about never bragging about being a good reader or making other people feel bad.  I don’t know if I gave too much information about disadvantaged kids, but I think it is important to acknowledge that Cole’s life is easy.

Anyway, if you have thoughts or advice I’d love it.  Seriously.

You should have told him that people with his genes are just better than other people.

We talk a lot about the good qualities that other people have. Since he just assumes that he’s awesome and everyone knows that, it’s good to talk about other people being awesome too. I don’t know.
